Tending the Land as She Heals
Handsown Farm is in a season of rest and renewal.
After years of commodity crops, the soil deserves a sabbatical. Studies show that letting land lie fallow, even for a short time, increases soil organic matter and nitrogen and boosts microbial diversity, which improves soil quality and leads to higher crop yields. So we’re listening.
We’ve planted perennial herbs, flowers and native trees, bushes, nuts and berries. Chickens and annual vegetables will return when the earth is ready.
During this healing time we’re laying the groundwork for regenerative practices: cover cropping, composting, permaculture design and creating habitats for pollinators and wildlife.
If you’d like to get your hands dirty, join us for tree‑planting days or help us harvest herbs when they’re abundant.
Healing the land heals us.
